🌟Local Kiddo

Your weekend plans, handled.

📆Issue No. 7 - March 8-9, 2025

Welcome to the weekend, fellow culture-seekers! So many free art events these next two days, your cultural calendar might need its own calendar. From the de Young and MoAD's free family day to SFMOMA's Second Sundays, the city's museums have collectively decided to welcome small humans with open arms. Even better? They've planned activities that won't bore you to tears. Here's your guide to an arts-filled weekend that works for everyone.

Welcome to your weekly guide to kid-friendly San Francisco activities that parents will actually enjoy too.

⚡ TLDR: Weekend Gameplan

For the kids (allegedly):

  • Meet the Beekeeper at Randall Museum (Saturday)

  • SF Jazz Girls Day (Saturday)

  • de Young family day + art making (Saturday)

  • MoAD free family activities (Saturday)

  • SFMOMA Second Sundays program (Sunday)

  • SF Youth Orchestra performance (Sunday)

For the adults (because you matter too):

  • Roller Disco Party (Saturday)

🎯The Main Event(s)

Meet the Beekeeper at Randall Museum transforms a simple observation hive into a fascinating window into the world of honeybees. Unlike many kid-oriented nature programs, this one delivers genuine education without the sugar coating (maybe a little honey though).

Worth Knowing:

  • Saturday, March 8

  • 10:30am-2:30pm

  • Completely free

  • No registration required

  • Drop-in format

  • Real beekeepers with actual expertise

Pro move: Make it a full Randall Museum day. Start with the morning science workshop, visit the beekeepers, then eat lunch with panoramic city views before returning to make kaleidoscopes for the afternoon art session. The animal exhibits are open throughout, and unlike larger museums, the scale prevents overwhelm.

SFJAZZ Girls Day: In The Mix A partnership with Women's Audio Mission that offers a rare glimpse into the world of music production and engineering for future female producers.

Worth knowing:

  • Saturday, March 8

  • 11:00am

  • Free workshop

  • Ideal for ages 13-18

  • Female and gender-expansive youth

  • No experience required (though instrument proficiency recommended)

  • Led by professional audio engineers

Parent intel: This isn't just button-pushing – the Women's Audio Mission team knows how to engage teens with actual skills and science while keeping it accessible. A refreshing alternative to the usual "girls in tech" events.

🎨Cultural Queue

de Young Family Day This month's free programming hits that sweet spot where both parents and kids find something to enjoy without the usual museum tension. Start with a family tour then make art inspired by Leilah Babirye: We Have a History on view at the museum.

Worth knowing:

  • Saturday, March 8

  • 10:30am: Family Tour (45 minutes, perfect length)

  • 11:00am-3:00pm: Family Art Making

  • All-day access to galleries and tower

Parent intel: The family tour guides actually understand how to engage kids without dumbing down the art. You might even learn something yourself.

MoAD &ICA SF Free Family Day While the Museum of African Diaspora is closed, they are partnering with Institute of Contemporary Art San Francisco (ICA SF) to take the family day on the road. The Museum of African Diaspora & ICA SF offers the perfect sized museum experience for shorter attention spans, with enough sophistication for adults.

Worth knowing:

  • Saturday, March 8

  • Hosted at Institute of Contemporary Art San Francisco

  • 11:30am: Storytime led by Vicky Lam, Children’s Librarian at San Francisco Public Library North Beach Branch

  • 1-3:00pm: Craft activity designed and led by MoAD

  • 3:30pm: Poetry Writing + Reading led by artist and educator Michelle Yi Martin

  • Professional teaching artists

  • Manageable museum size

SFMOMA Second Sundays for Families The museum transforms its education center into a genuine creative space that goes beyond typical kid crafts.

Worth knowing:

  • Sunday, March 9

  • 10:30am-3:00pm

  • Koret Education Center

  • Designed for all ages

  • Gallery connections

  • Professional art educators

🌙After Hours (Adult Only)

When you finally secure that sitter:

Saturday Night Fever: Adult Roller Disco Channel your pre-kid energy at the Church of 8 Wheels' adults-only roller session. This is how you remember that you had coordination and rhythm before you spent years carrying diaper bags and chasing toddlers.

Worth the sitter:

  • Saturday, 7:00-8:30pm

  • Adults 18+ only

  • Actual music you recognize

  • DJ spinning proper disco classics

  • Perfect 90-minute length

What Else Is Good This Week

Saturday, 3/8:

Sunday, 3/9:

🔭 On Our Radar

Little Ravers: Yes, You Read That Correctly Mark your calendars for SF's family-friendly rave coming soon. And before you roll your eyes, consider that this might be the perfect way to introduce your kids to actual music while reclaiming a bit of your pre-parent identity. What to expect:

  • Kid-friendly remixes (that aren't just Baby Shark on repeat)

  • Adult-worthy old school House, Garage, and R&B Actual professional DJs Proper sound systems (at safe volume levels)

  • The rare chance to dance with your kids without feeling ridiculous

Early intel suggests this might sell out quickly. This could either be brilliant or bizarre, but we're intrigued enough to find out.

SFJAZZ Family Matinee: Mark Your Calendar Circle March 22nd for a rare family music experience that doesn't involve animated characters or endless repetition. Saxophonist Kasey Knudsen brings her ensemble to SFJAZZ for a performance that respects both young ears and adult musical taste. Worth planning ahead:

  • Professional musicians, not "children's performers"

  • Perfect 60-minute format

  • Comfortable seating for all

  • Sound levels that work for sensitive ears

Gabby's Dollhouse Takes Over: For the Gabby fans in your household (we know they exist), the Creativity Museum hosts the colorful cat on March 28-29. While firmly in the "for the kids" category, these character events typically offer enough interactive elements to keep parents moderately entertained too. What to expect:

  • Character meet-and-greets

  • Themed craft activities

  • Photo opportunities

  • Reasonable crowd management

  • Proximity to Yerba Buena Gardens for post-event decompression

Pro tip: These character events tend to sell out quickly. If your little one is a fan, set calendar alerts for ticket releases.
