🌟Local Kiddo

Your weekend plans, handled.

📆Issue No. 6 - March 1-7, 2025

Good morning, sunshine!☀️ Looking for last-minute weekend plans? We’ve got you. As we emerge from our collective seasonal fog hibernation, this weekend delivers the perfect blend of outdoor adventures and cultural fixes. The Botanical Garden is showing off with its Magnolias, SFMOMA is jazzing it up, and there's not a rain plan in sight (except in SF, who knows, so carry a jacket with you).

Welcome to your weekly guide to kid-friendly San Francisco activities that parents will actually enjoy too.

⚡ TLDR: Weekend Gameplan

For the kids (allegedly):

  • Bean Sprouts Family Days at Botanical Garden

  • Movie Screenings: Pirates of the Carribean at the Walt Disney Museum

  • Music: Free Jazz at SFMOMA (no museum admission required)

  • So much more!

For the adults (because you matter too):

  • Salsa Dancing (movement other than running after little humans)

  • After-hours Drag Show

🎯The Main Event

Bean Sprouts Family Day gives the kiddos an opportunity to get outside, dig, water, pick, build, explore, and investigate in the Botanical Garden’s “yes space” for kids! The Children's Garden at the Botanical Gardens into the perfect spring playground. As the weather finally turns, this is exactly the outdoor reset everyone needs.

Worth Knowing:

  • Saturday, March 1

  • 12-4pm

  • $Free

  • Click here for a map to get to the Children’s Garden

🚌 Getting There: N-Judah, 44-O’Shaughnessy, 5-Fulton

Pro move: Make it a full Golden Gate Park day. Start at the California Kahve coffee caravan in JFK Promenade (better than it has any right to be), then hit the de Young's free Saturday (free for SF residents with ID). When energy starts flagging, the museum café makes for a surprisingly civilized lunch spot with actual vegetables on the menu. End at the Children's Garden for Bean Sprouts Day when everyone's refueled and the afternoon crowds have thinned. Don’t forget to enjoy the Magnolia blossoms before the season is over. A one-parking spot, full-day adventure that hits both culture and outdoor play.

🎨Cultural Queue

Free Jazz at SFMOMA brings Heavy Arts Ensemble to the Wattis Theater for what might be the perfect Sunday afternoon cultural moment. The best part? No museum admission required.

Worth knowing:

  • Sunday, March 2

  • 3:00-4:15pm (doors at 2:30)

  • Free admission

  • First come first serve seating

  • No minimum age requirement

Pro move: Make it a full museum day and explore after the film if you have time. The Amy Sherald: American Sublime exhibit closes on March 9.

🚌 Getting There: Muni to Montgomery Station, 5-Fulton, 6-Haight/Parnassus, 7-Haight/Noriega, 38-Geary

🌙After Hours (Adult Only)

When you finally secure that sitter:

For those who prefer movement to spectating, the SF Salsa Bachata night offers FIVE dance lessons plus dedicated rooms for salsa, bachata, and zouk.

Worth knowing:

  • Friday, March 7

  • Beginner-friendly lesson at 8pm

  • Salsa and Bachata Dancing all night long (9:30pm-1:30am)

  • Multiple dance styles in different rooms

  • No partner required

When the kids are finally asleep, Drag Race royalty awaits. All Stars winner Shea Couleé brings her legendary performance to SF for one night only.

Worth knowing:

  • Saturday, March 8

  • Doors 9:30pm, show 11:30pm

  • Expect stunning looks

  • World-class performances

  • The rare chance to stay up past 10pm

  • Actually worth the next-day exhaustion

Pro move: Make dinner reservations at Nightbird or Rich Table first - you'll need sustenance for a proper night out. And yes, you'll be tired tomorrow, but sometimes adult memories are worth the extra coffee.

What Else Is Good This Week

Sunday, 3/2:

🔭 On Our Radar

Little Ravers: Yes, You Read That Correctly Mark your calendars for SF's family-friendly rave coming soon. And before you roll your eyes, consider that this might be the perfect way to introduce your kids to actual music while reclaiming a bit of your pre-parent identity. What to expect:

  • Kid-friendly remixes (that aren't just Baby Shark on repeat)

  • Adult-worthy old school House, Garage, and R&B Actual professional DJs Proper sound systems (at safe volume levels)

  • The rare chance to dance with your kids without feeling ridiculous

Early intel suggests this might sell out quickly. This could either be brilliant or bizarre, but we're intrigued enough to find out.

SFJAZZ Family Matinee: Mark Your Calendar Circle March 22nd for a rare family music experience that doesn't involve animated characters or endless repetition. Saxophonist Kasey Knudsen brings her ensemble to SFJAZZ for a performance that respects both young ears and adult musical taste. Worth planning ahead:

  • Professional musicians, not "children's performers"

  • Perfect 60-minute format

  • Comfortable seating for all

  • Sound levels that work for sensitive ears

Gabby's Dollhouse Takes Over: For the Gabby fans in your household (we know they exist), the Creativity Museum hosts the colorful cat on March 28-29. While firmly in the "for the kids" category, these character events typically offer enough interactive elements to keep parents moderately entertained too. What to expect:

  • Character meet-and-greets

  • Themed craft activities

  • Photo opportunities

  • Reasonable crowd management

  • Proximity to Yerba Buena Gardens for post-event decompression

Pro tip: These character events tend to sell out quickly. If your little one is a fan, set calendar alerts for ticket releases.
