🌟Local Kiddo

📆Issue No. 1 - January 25-26, 2025

Your weekend plans, handled.

Welcome to your weekly guide to kid-friendly San Francisco activities that parents actually enjoy too. Here’s the plan:

🎯The Main Event

FOG Design+Art Fair is back at Fort Mason, and their new Family Days program proves that you don’t have to choose between good art and happy kids.

Saturday’s Highlight: Artmosphere brings Wayne Thiebaud’s iconic work (yes, those paint-lickable cakes) to life with a hands-on art activity.

Sunday’s Move: Bay Area Discovery Museum takes over with their “Wire Wonders” workshop. Think sculptural play but for the kiddos.

  • 11:30-2:30pm both days

  • Materials that inspire creativity

  • Projects you won't secretly recycle

  • Led by art educators

Worth Knowing:

  • Fair is open from 11am-5:00pm, Fort Mason

  • $35 adults, kiddos under 12 free

  • Clean bathrooms by the entrance

Pro Move: Skip the cafe inside. Instead, take an 8 minute walk to Kopiku Coffee for a strong Indonesian coffee program and a Pandan matcha.

🚌 Getting There: 30-Stockton, 28-19th Avenue to Marina/Laguna, 49 to Van Ness & Bay St

🎨Cultural Queue

SF Zoo Lunar New Year celebration runs two days this year, with thoughtfully timed  performances each day.

  • Lion’s Dance by Chung Ngai Dance Troupe

  • Multiple shows (11:15am, 12:30pm, 1:45pm)

  • Catch the 1:15 show before crowds peak

  • Arts and crafts throughout

  • Flying Angels Chinese dance performance

  • Two shows (11am and 12:15pm)

  • More great craft stations

Worth Knowing:

  • Regular zoo admission applies

  • Activities run 10am-4pm both days

  • Learn about animals from the Pacific Rim region

Pro Move: Time your visit around the earliest performance each day, then head to the back of the zoo while everyone is still watching the later shows. You’ll have the red pandas practically to yourself.

🚌 Getting There: L-Taraval, 18-Sloat and 45th, 23-Monterey

🌙After Hours (Adult Only)

When you finally secure that sitter:

Cal Academy NightLife: "Lunar Underground"

Cal Academy of Sciences is bringing in the year of the snake with local treasures, tasty treats, live tattoos (yes, actual permanent tattoos), and LED lion dances.

Thursday, January 30, 6-10pm

  • Adults-only after hours

  • Cocktails and bites from Liquid Happiness and Constellation Culinary

  • The last entry to the rainforest is at 7:30pm

  • Night(Life) Market feature local Asian-owned businesses

🚌 Getting There: N-Judah, 5-Fulton, 44-O’Shaughnessy

🔭 On Our Radar

We're breaking our SF-only suggestions for this one because Bay Area Discovery Museum Summer and Spring camps are just that good. Member registration opens January 21 (February 11 for non-members), and some things are worth crossing the bridge for. (Even if we have to admit Marin has cool stuff too.)

P.S. Forward this to that parent friend who's still mourning their pre-kid morning routine. We've got them.

P.P.S. Want to partner with us? We work with brands that parents actually want in their lives (you know, the ones that don't make us choose between "kid-friendly" and "still cool"). Email us at [email protected] if that sounds like you.
