🌟Local Kiddo

Your weekend plans, handled.

📆Issue No. 5 - February 22-28, 2025

Despite being in SF, technology is not my forte. New phones and authenticators had me locked out of my account for a few days, which explains our fashionably late arrival in your inbox (but just in time for the weekend 😉).

Welcome to your weekly guide to kid-friendly San Francisco activities that parents will actually enjoy too.

This weekend delivers a perfect mix of world-class museums, quirky theater, experimental dance, plus some penguin encounters for good measure. Here’s your plan to take advantage of it all.

⚡ TLDR: Weekend Gameplan

For the kids (allegedly):

  • Theater: James and the Giant Peach or Back to the Future

  • Movie Screenings: Harlem Ice at SFMOMA or a sensory friendly screening of The Princess and the Frog in the Presidio

  • Animals: Cal Academy penguin feeding or the Randall Museum keeper talks

  • So much more!

For the adults (because you matter too):

  • After Hours Yoga in the Conservatory of Flowers

  • Noise Pop Festival (where you can pretend you still know what's cool)

  • SF Beer Week (because parenting requires hydration)

🎯The Main Event

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. James and the Giant Peach presented by the Children’s Theatre Association of San Francisco is at the Presidio Theatre until March 1! They’ve managed to capture Roald Dahl’s weird-but-wonderful vibe perfectly.

Worth Knowing:

  • Saturday, February 22 and Sunday, February 23, 2:00pm

  • 1 hour run time

  • $15-$20

  • Get tickets here

Future Shows:

  • March 1, 10:30am or 1:30pm

🚌 Getting There: PresidioGo Free shuttle, 43-Masonic and, 45-Union/Stockton

Pro move: Make it a full Presidio day. Start your morning with a coffee from the California Kahave food truck and head to Outpost Playground for amazing views of the Golden Gate bridge (if Karl doesn’t join us) and an opportunity for your little kiddo to run around. Grab lunch at a food truck before the show.

Alternative Theater Options (for older kiddos)

Back to the Future: The Musical For the 6+ crowd, this one's actually worth the ticket price. All the nostalgia you want, plus enough new material to keep it fresh.

Worth knowing:

  • $75-$254

  • Orpheum Theater

  • Saturday, February 22: 1:00pm & 7:30pm

  • Sunday, February 23: 1:00pm

  • No kids under 5

  • 2 hours 40 minutes with intermission

🚌 Getting There: Muni to Civic Center, 6-Haight/Parnassus, 7-Haight/Noriega, 9-San Bruno, 19-Polk, 27-Bryant

🎨Cultural Queue

SF MOMA Family Film: Harlem Ice A refreshing change from the usual kids’ fare, this SFFILM collaboration brings an inspiring story about young Black figure skaters in Harlem that works for multiple generations.

Worth knowing:

  • Sunday, 10:30am

  • Free with RSVP

  • Floor 1, Wattis Theater

  • Comfortable seating

  • About 60 minutes long

Pro move: Get there early and snag a quiet corner in the lobby. The coffee is decent, and kids can move around before settling in for the film. Explore the museum after the film if you have time. The Amy Sherald: American Sublime exhibit closes on March 9.

🚌 Getting There: Muni to Montgomery Station, 5-Fulton, 6-Haight/Parnassus, 7-Haight/Noriega, 38-Geary

Sensory-Friendly Disney Screening Walt Disney Family Museum's "Princess and the Frog" screening offers a rare theater experience designed to be a comfortable experience for everyone. Lights will be dimmed instead of off, volume will be slightly lowered, and closed captioning will be turned on. Guests are welcome to get up, walk around, sing, dance, and enjoy the film in whatever way is most comfortable to them.

Worth knowing:

  • Free for members and children under age 5

  • Tickets: $10 adults, seniors, and students, $8 youth

  • Sunday, February 23: 11:00am

Pro Tip: If your kiddo still has lots of energy before the movie, head over to Outpost Playground to let them burn off that energy before a nap.

🚌 Getting There: PresidioGo Free shuttle, 43-Masonic and , 45-Union/Stockton

🌙After Hours (Adult Only)

When you finally secure that sitter:

After-Hours Yoga in the Conservatory Downward dog surrounded by tropical plants instead of scattered toys? Yes, please. The Conservatory of Flowers transforms into the city's most atmospheric yoga studio for one evening.

Worth the $30:

  • 5:30-6:30pm (perfect post-work timing)

  • All skill levels welcome

  • Surrounded by lush tropical plants

  • Temperature-controlled paradise

Pro move: Kids can technically join, but this is one of those rare activities better enjoyed solo. Your Instagram story will finally feature something other than playground equipment and half-eaten chicken nuggets. The quiet, the greenery, and the lack of "Mom, watch this!" interruptions make this the self-care opportunity you've been promising yourself all month.

SF Beer Week Takes Over

Beer Week returns with 10 days of hoptimism spread across the city. This is your chance to remember life pre-kids, one craft pour at a time.

Worth Knowing:

  • Runs February 21-March 1

  • Events throughout the Bay

  • SF Beer Week Fest kicks off on February 22 at Salesforce Park at 1:30pm.

  • Special releases you can't get elsewhere

  • Brewery collaborations worth trying

  • Food pairings that go beyond pretzels

Noise Pop Festival: Parents Still Have Cool Points The 32nd year of SF's beloved indie music festival reminds us of our pre-kid identities. Spanning February 20-March 2, this is your chance to trade sippy cups for craft cocktails.

Worth Knowing:

  • Multiple venues across the city

  • Mix of established acts and emerging artists

  • Happy hours that don't involve children's menus

  • Art exhibitions worth seeing without "I'm bored" soundtrack

  • Late-night pop-ups that remember what cool feels like

Pro move: Book tickets for a mid-week show at the Independent or Bottom of the Hill. You'll dodge the weekend crowds, and the Thursday night sets usually hit that sweet spot of energy without the Friday madness.

What Else Is Good This Week

🔭 On Our Radar

Mark your calendars now - Randall's coveted spring programs are opening for registration, and they're worth setting alarms for.

Spring Classes:

  • Member Registration: February 22, 10:00am

  • General Public: March 1, 10:00am

  • Actual toddler woodworking (yes, really)

  • Ceramics classes that go beyond playdough

Pro move: The toddler woodworking classes deserve their cult status - think real tools and actual projects, not just gluing popsicle sticks. If you're serious about snagging spots, consider the $65 family membership now. The early registration access pays for itself, especially for the summer camps.

Little Ravers: Yes, You Read That Correctly Mark your calendars for SF's family-friendly rave coming soon. And before you roll your eyes, consider that this might be the perfect way to introduce your kids to actual music while reclaiming a bit of your pre-parent identity. What to expect:

  • Kid-friendly remixes (that aren't just Baby Shark on repeat)

  • Adult-worthy old school House, Garage, and R&B Actual professional DJs Proper sound systems (at safe volume levels)

  • The rare chance to dance with your kids without feeling ridiculous

Early intel suggests this might sell out quickly. This could either be brilliant or bizarre, but we're intrigued enough to find out.
